HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA FOR THIS COSTUME?

My husband was a big basketball player in high school. He loves it. I wanted to paint my belly because it is so big & round. I’m 38 weeks pregnant. I was looking for something to do other than the typical painting a jack-o-lantern. I wanted it to go with my husband’s costume. We came up with this idea that was super cute and cheap because we already had everything we needed around the house!

WHAT ITEMS DID YOU USE TO MAKE THIS COSTUME AND HOW?

We used orange & black acrylic paint. I actually painted the ball on my own belly myself using the mirror. I cut an old white t-shirt so I could cover my back and shoulders. I also made sure to paint over my stretch marks to make the basketball. Haha. This is our first pregnancy!

The rest was just headbands, tennis shoes, and sports shorts.

WHAT REACTION DID YOU GET WHEN WEARING THIS COSTUME?

We got ALOT of looks, laughs, & comments. Everyone wanted a picture of us. I got several comments about how brave I was as a pregnant woman to do this. What I did not realize is how much a hand magnet the basket ball would be. Usually people ask or hesitate to touch my belly but I guess since it’s painted and exposed then everyone felt welcomed to touch. I truly didn’t mind at all. I was happy to share the belly joy & some got to feel kicks. I enjoy seeing their faces light up with that. The kids were especially mesmerized by the belly.

It’s been a hard pregnancy with low thyroid issues, anemia, bad pregnancy carpal tunnel, and severe swelling. This was a great day to get out and laugh at myself & not worry about the problems and just celebrate my last couple weeks of pregnancy before my first baby is welcomed to the family. My husband recently quit his job, we sold our house and moved in with my parents, all so he could go back to school to get a degree in Chemical Engineering to provide for our family. Soon after this huge leap of faith we found out we were pregnant to top it all off. It’s a crazy ride and we don’t have much higher money since I’m home to take care of the baby and my husband is in school. The prize money would be a huge blessing to pay off a car note and debt to lower our monthly expenses. It would also help us pay some medical bills.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA FOR THIS COSTUME?

My husband and I have always dressed up together since we were dating and now that we have kids, it’s more fun to dress as a family. We didn’t want to leave out the new baby, so I wanted to think of something that would give the baby her own part of the costume even though I am still pregnant with her. I just happened to come across a picture of little red riding hood and the big bad wolf and got to thinking that if I was the big bad wolf after he swallowed the grandma, the baby could be the grandma. It was perfect, and it made it easy to come up with related costumes for my husband and our first daughter. My husband and I liked that it wasn’t something we had seen done before as a maternity costume so we decided to run with it.

WHAT ITEMS DID YOU USE TO MAKE THIS COSTUME AND HOW?

I picked up some cheap reading glasses, borrowed a housecoat from my own grandma, and bought a shower cap that somewhat matched the housecoat. Then I used my computer to create an image that looked like an x-ray grandma leaning over a cane, printed it on glossy photo paper, and safety pinned it to the housecoat. This was important because we wanted the baby to have a costume. To make it look like a grey body, I simply used a grey sweat shirt and pants (which is perfect for the pregnant mama), and my mom had some furry gloves that she loaned me for the night. I did purchase the tail and ears and then cut slits in the shower cap for the ears to show through. My husband did my face paint. For the woodsman, we just needed to buy a fake ax and an ordinary flannel shirt. Everything else he already owned. He used permanent markers to improve the look of the ax. Little red riding hood was also fairly simple. We just picked up a red coat at Walmart, which will also be her coat to use this winter, and I made a hood out of fleece, which I attached with snaps. We didn’t have a dress that seemed fitting so we picked one out at a consignment store. Then we found a basket at a local thrift shop and added a picnic place setting I found in our basement.

WHAT REACTION DID YOU GET WHEN WEARING THIS COSTUME?

Everyone thought it was pretty clever. We got a lot of compliments on it. Some people asked why the wolf would have a big belly and thought it was pretty funny when we explained that the grandma was in there.

It was pretty cold this year, so it worked out great that this costume kept all of us warm without a lot of extra bundling up. We simply added a red stocking cap and some mittens for my daughter, and I wore another layer under the sweat shirt and pants.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA FOR THIS COSTUME?

I Googled pregnant belly costumes and went from there. I thought to myself “how can I make it my own,” so I put Woodstock on a headband to wear on my head.

WHAT ITEMS DID YOU USE TO MAKE THIS COSTUME AND HOW?

Black felt with a sticky back for eyes ears and nose.

Woodstock was a print out that I laminated.

The headband was white, so I colored it red with a marker because the roof of Snoopy’s dog house is red.

WHAT REACTION DID YOU GET WHEN WEARING THIS COSTUME?

Everybody loved it and wanted to take a picture with me. Everyone thought it was creative and fun for the kids. I work with special needs children and they loved it! However, they thought it was just a dog.
